Hello,
About a six years ago, I began a weekly newsletter in the form of a personal diary. Initially, this was a reflective exercise for myself, a way to better understand the events in my life. However, over time, it attracted an audience, including paid subscribers on Substack.
I originally wrote the newsletter in Russian, but for various reasons (which I shall explain in future issues), I am now starting a new edition in English.
As for an introduction, I generally describe myself as an artist and art dealer. In the past, I have accumulated significant experience in media and communications — though what that fully entails is open to interpretation. The “official” version of my biography can be found on my homepage, which I am currently working to transform into an art marketplace. I shall share more details about this project in due course. In the meantime, I invite you to subscribe.
In this newsletter, as before, I shall share with you notable events from my life, intriguing discoveries from the internet — where I have spent over twenty-five years — and my thoughts on current happenings in the world. My aim is to create something original and engaging.
The structure of this newsletter will mirror that of the Russian edition:
• A song from Spotify that captures my current mood.
• A brief essay on global affairs.
• A similar essay with a personal focus.
• Updates on my work as an artist, along with achievements in other areas.
I shall strive to make this newsletter both informative and enjoyable.
I hope you find it to your liking.
Now, let us begin.
Global affairs
Of course, the presidential election in the US didn’t pass me by. I wrote a few articles in Novaya Gazeta (one of the last independent media outlets in Russia) about some of Donald Trump’s latest decisions. Anyway, in recent years, I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about internet governance. When I was growing up, there were no politicians involved. We built this network with our own hands. Really! I personally installed optic cable in my flat in Moscow and created a small ISP for my neighborhood.
Today, we can see a new layer in the OSI model: politics. I know how it has developed in different countries, including the Digital Safety Act in the UK, and I strongly disagree with attempts to pressure and censor the internet. I still don’t understand why a third party should decide what I can read, write, and watch.
As a fan of new technologies and an early adopter of many services, I still believe in new projects, like cryptocurrency and federated apps like BlueSky. I’m tired of the issues with popular services like Facebook and Twitter and regularly try to find alternatives. Still working on it.
It’s a big topic for discussion, and from time to time, I’ll share my thoughts on it.
Anyway, I prefer direct communication without a middleman, and a newsletter is a good format for that.
It’s a piece from a series about Heart & Angel, which I’m working on. You can find other works under the hashtag #heartandangel on any social network.
Personal area
Unfortunately I stuck in the middle of nowhere, without any staff. Picture above, I create on iPad that I borrow for couple of hours.
I hope next time I can tell more.
If you find this interesting - subscribe, write some comment. I need new friends and some feedback.
